For the Collector

History of American Needlework

Woman’s Day Book of American Needlework  1963   $20
Rose Wilder Lane

For Those Who Want to Push the Envelope

Making Mathematics With Needlework

Sarah-Marie Belcastro, Carolyn Yackel, Editors   $35

This unique book isn’t as far-fetched as one might think. Several schools in Marin use crochet as a means of teaching math to kindergartners. The kids love it, because it’s so tactile. Teachers love it, because it focuses the students’ energy. WOW! If this method had been used when I was in school, I might have actually developed something of an aptitude for the subject.

176 Amazing Stitches
Julia Key H. Snyder and Patsye B. Hardin   $34.95

The best description I can give you is it’s an Advanced Placement course in stitches! The book is small enough to fit in your stitching bag with very few of the “usual suspects."

Instead, you have nearly 20 variations on the Rhodes, 10+ Jessicas, a Stacked Open Lazy Daisy that would make an ideal tiny Menorah, a few blackwork offerings, and several Rhodes, just to name a few.

The best feature of this book is that each diagram is on the left. On the right is graph paper that truly replicates canvas weave. If you’re inspired to design your own stitch, you’re all set.
